Jay Starling teaches lessons on a variety of  musical instruments including dobro (resophonic guitar), guitar (acoustic and electric), piano, lap steel, drums, and bass.

Starling certainly has credentials, holding a B.A. in Professional Music from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. His senior thesis, “The Effects of Key Signature, Pitch and Tempo on Affect”, earned him “Best Research Poster 2002” from Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood College Annual Research Symposium.

Really, though, it’s Starling’s humble approach, kind humor and genuine love of sharing music that make him such a remarkable instructor.

Starling takes care to cater each lesson to the interests of the student. Do you want to play by the book? Learn by ear? Improvise, but with the ability to fall back on strong reading skills and music theory? Is it jazz, rock, bluegrass, reggae, funk, country or classical that gets your musical bone buzzing? It’s all up to you.

Join Starling in his quite home studio just north of downtown Asheville, North Carolina. All are welcome, regardless of skill level or age.
